As businesses keep pace with the rapid
change of office technology, the significant
cost of decommissioning the older technology
is often overlooked. The result can often
be warehouses full of retired computers,
copiers, monitors, and other Information
Technology (IT) assets. Not only are these
assets depreciating but the IT department
has the added costs of inventory management
and warehousing.
From the IT perspective,
companies that store older electronic
equipment are essentially paying rent
each month on non-income-producing assets.
IDC estimates that most corporations store
old computer equipment for up to three
years at a cost of about $360 per machine,
and then pay an additional $218 for its
eventual disposal.
"The best way
to dispose of old computers is, clearly,
to resell them. That way you get something
back." Kevin Burden, IDC
analyst.
IDC estimates that the cost
of refurbishing computers for resale is
$318 per machine, which is offset by an
average wholesale price of $200, reducing
net disposal cost to $118.
"Right now [computer
manufacturers] don't care about that cost,
as they don't pay it," Ted
Smith, Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition.

Once the decision has been
made to dispose of these assets, organizations
are often very surprised to find that the
cost of disposal can easily exceed $300
per PC if not managed properly. Not to mention
the environmental guidelines that must be
strictly followed to properly dispose of
the assets. In short, IT asset disposal
is a significant portion of an asset’s total
cost of ownership.
Organizations that undertake the complex
process to remarket these assets on their
own, often find that the return on investment
is not worth the significant time and money
required to successfully embark on such
an endeavor. Instead, the time and money
that would be spent on asset recovery would
be better utilized on their core business,
which once again leads to warehouses full
of retired IT assets.
Fortunately our core business is IT asset
recovery. recoupIT has made the investment
required for the software systems, warehousing,
inventorying, additional personnel, and sales
and marketing efforts required to successfully
and efficiently recover these IT assets
for our clients.
Understanding that our
customers have unique needs, we have developed
two asset disposition services:
Asset Recovery Services
Asset Recovery
Services are for functional equipment with
economic value in the secondary market. With
this service, customers receive competitive
values for their retiring IT assets.
Asset Recycling
Services provide an environmentally safe means
for the disposal of IT equipment that has
no remaining economic value in the secondary
market. These assets are disposed of in accordance
with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
guidelines.
As is often the case, organizations tend to
have assets that fit both categories of services.
No need to worry, our experienced team will
work with you towards a competitive and comprehensive
solution to meet your needs.
Both of our services
include:
- Dedicated
project management and single source accountability
- Complete electronic media erasure or destruction
- EPA complaint disposal and customers indemnification
for such disposal
